Google recently announced that it will discontinue Google Business Messages (GBM) and Google Call History on July 31, 2024. As Google pivots towards a future increasingly driven by AI, some functionality no longer fits into that vision. Here's what you need to know to prepare for the upcoming deprecation date and how to navigate these changes effectively.

Google Business Messages to Shut Down: What Brands Need to Know
Yext
Jun 3, 2024
Key dates to remember
July 15, 2024: Customers will no longer be able to start new chat conversations with your brand from Google. Customers in existing chat conversations will be notified that chat will be phased out.
July 31, 2024: Chat functionality in Google Business Profile (GBP) will end. This means you'll no longer receive new chat messages. You'll no longer be able to see call history in GBP.
What this means for brands
If you are currently utilizing Google Business Messages on Google, there is no immediate action on your part. However, if you have embedded Google Business Messages on your website or elsewhere, you should plan to remove those references before July 15th.
Finally, if you would like to retain logs of your messages or call history, we recommend exporting that data directly from GBP before July 31st. This will help retain valuable customer interaction history and insights.
Does this impact Google Business Profile?
Despite these changes, the core functionalities of GBP remain intact. Customers will still be able to find your brand via Google Search and Maps as they normally would. Your listings will still generate important analytics data such as clicks to call, driving directions, and website visits.
At Yext, our seamless integration with GBP ensures that your brand continues to deliver consistent and engaging experiences across all touchpoints. Our platform adapts to changes, allowing you to maintain a robust digital presence without disruption.
Why this matters
Changes like these underscore the importance of flexibility and adaptability in managing your digital presence. Google's move away from certain functionalities is a reminder that the digital landscape is constantly evolving. As your trusted partner, Yext is here to help you stay ahead of these changes and ensure your brand continues to thrive.
